Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s 100 Best Corporate Citizens ranking is based on a broad set of data consisting of 298 data points. They are organized in seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relation, human rights, corporate governance, financial performance and philanthropy. The data set is based on published data only. The pretty robust methodology is in stewardship of the American Corporate Responsibility Officers Association’s Ranking and Rating Committee. It also incorporates a regular invitation to stakeholders to review and comment on the methodology.
While the methodology is pretty solid the limitation of the ranking to the US market reduces its value and its relevance. A ranking of the respective categories would allow to receive further really useful insights.
Top of the 2014 ranking is Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. On the second position of this year’s ranking is Johnsons & Johnson, another pharmaceutical company. But beside that the top 10 list contains a broad variety of industries: Gap on 3, Microsoft on 4 and Mattel on 5 exemplifies this. This years leader of the ranking, Bristol-Myers Squibb, is marked with a yellow card. This indicates that a company has severe issues usually connected to pending or completed administrative or official legal sanction. CR has even the option of showing a red card which means a company will be expelled from the ranking despite its good numbers. In this year’s ranking there are three yellow and one red card displayed. Next to BMS it is Occidental Petroleum and Computer Science corporation having a yellow and PG&E having a red card.
